Mehndi runs into the evening under bulbs nobody chose for it, warm and low and never where you want them. Henna is the subject, so hands rather than faces govern the exposure, and a small light off to one side keeps the pattern legible instead of flattening it. Ahead of all that we want a name and a boundary: one person to rule on photography, and a clear edge to it. Agreed once, that holds for the whole evening.

Signing is four people at a table with paperwork. Faces are the picture, documents are not. We work quietly from beyond the table and put everything down for recitation. Darkness has arrived by the rukhsati and nobody deserves a flash in the eyes. The doorway and the car get lit instead, and faces fall where they land. A walima the next evening is a separate job with separate problems, planned separately.
