Somali ceremonies often carry a distinctive rhythm of recitation and response, and we listen for it rather than working to a template borrowed from another community's wedding. Where the bride's side is separate from the men, so her consent, her signing and her joy are all recorded. Sweet dates or mithai are often shared the moment the nikah is done, and we photograph the first taste passed between the newly married couple.
Rukhsati is the hardest event to photograph well. We take a position near the door early, use a long lens and let the family say goodbye without a camera pushed into it. The baraat is pure energy, and we photograph the music, the dancing and the grin of the groom brought forward at the centre of the procession. Baraat coverage is done on foot inside the procession, keeping pace with the dhol and the dancing, then turning at the gates to catch the other family waiting to receive it.
