Inside a gurdwara the floor, the sightlines and the light have been fixed since before you had a date, and where we stand is a place granted to us rather than a place we pick. What a photographer would ordinarily solve by moving a lamp gets solved here by lens length and by staying put.

Working from the floor through the four laavan
Anand karaj coverage starts as a question about distance. The sangat sits at floor level, the platform stands high, and shooting from your feet turns every frame into somebody's shoulder, so we take the floor, fit a long lens and stay there. Halls of that sort usually mix tungsten overhead with daylight falling through high windows, and those two never agree. Skin tone is what we grade for, and the walls end up wherever that grade puts them.
Four laavan, and from one seat each looks much like the one before. What tells them apart is who has risen, who has just sat, and where the palla runs across the gap, so during the walking we watch hands more than faces. Milni at the start, doli when it is over: those are the loud bookends. Langar is where photographs of your relatives really come from, since none of them are performing there.
