Two buildings and two kinds of light: many Sikh wedding days take that shape. Whatever hall holds the anand karaj is lit for a congregation and for reading, and that lighting was fixed long before anyone arrived with a camera. Whichever room hosts your evening is ours to build from nothing. Those are opposite jobs, and they want different equipment on one day. Nothing about the first room can be altered; almost everything about the second can.
Warwick draws guests from Hatton, Budbrooke, Barford and from well beyond that, so the morning gathering outdoors can be larger than families predict. That matters photographically. Milni embraces come in pairs, quickly, in whatever weather the county town supplies, and no embrace happens twice. That, not the ceremony, sets our arrival time: parked and ready while the first cars are still filling. Warwick Castle stands inside the town itself, which shortens the convoy but not the morning.

Inside the hall the rules are not ours to bend. Nobody stands higher than the sangat, which for a photographer means working from the same floor everybody else is sitting on, towards the back, working long, with knees that complain by langar. No flash fires in that room. Whatever the overhead lighting gives is what the pictures get, so exposure is decided by the door and left there. Guests are not moved for us, and neither is the furniture.
Repetition is what the laavan hand you, the only repetition in the day: what the first round teaches about where the palla falls and which way you both rise gets used three more times over. A photographer who misses it usually misses it only once. Between them sits the ardas, which nobody should be photographed walking across. The doli is the opposite case, unrepeatable and the heaviest thing on your schedule, so the coverage stays well back and largely leaves it alone.
