Documenting Sikh weddings in Warwick

Warwick is a historic town with a famous castle. We are used to multi-venue days throughout Warwickshire, moving smoothly between Leamington Spa, Kenilworth and Stratford. From the darbar sahib to the reception floor, we photograph the whole day with a calm, familiar presence.

We capture the emotion honestly, from the laughter of the jaggo night to the tears of the doli. We bring a long lens and a light touch, so the four laavan are captured from the sides of the gurdwara at a respectful distance. Our style is unobtrusive, so the darbar sahib stays a place of worship and never becomes a photoshoot.

Much of our work takes us across Warwickshire; Warwick, a historic town with a famous castle, and the towns around it, including Leamington Spa, Kenilworth and Stratford, are very familiar to us. We also cover nearby Rugby and Nuneaton. Close to Warwick, we have worked at venues including Warwick Castle and Warwick House.

Warwick is the historic county town of Warwickshire, set above a bend in the River Avon and famous for its castle. Warwick railway station is served by Chiltern Railways with links to Leamington Spa, Birmingham and London Marylebone, with the M40 nearby. For portraits away from the celebration, Priory Park in the centre of Warwick, near the railway station works beautifully, and Warwick Castle, a medieval fortress on the River Avon adds a real sense of place.

From the milni to the laavan

The kirtan and shabads that fill the gurdwara are as much a part of the story as the laavan themselves. The ardaas and the hukamnama that frame the ceremony are moments of stillness we capture with care. The hukamnama, the reading taken after the laavan, closes the ceremony, and we capture it with respect.

The pre-wedding events are often where the most natural photographs come from, and we give them full attention. The doli, when the bride leaves her family home, is the most tender moment of the day. The dhol and bhangra of the jaggo are pure joy, and we capture every bit of the energy.
