Palla is the quiet stretch, and the stretch people ask for most afterwards. It is brief, it sits low, and a camera at standing height converts it into a study of scalps. We drop to the floor and stay there. Through the laavan the pace is a slow walk, and what pays is not the walking but the halts, when faces settle and the hall watches. Four halts, three seconds apiece. Miss them and you have photographed a queue.

Then the day loosens. Milni lands in a doorway or on tarmac depending on the sky. Two sets of relatives greet each other in pairs, most of them strangers until that minute, and a photographer holding the names beats one holding a better lens. Langar is eaten sitting down and looks wrong from above, so we sit too. Doli is the one that hurts. Distance is the only correct response, and no instruction of any kind.

No, we do not direct in that room. It keeps an order of its own that no photographer should be interrupting, so we settle our positions beforehand and then work quietly from them for the duration, moving only if somebody tells us to.
