Everyone is down at floor level, which drops the whole ceremony below waist height and cancels most of a camera's ordinary habits. We stay low, on long lenses, towards the rear and the flanks. Asking for anything at all in that room would be out of order. The granthi governs the tempo; our presence must not register in it. Fluorescent tubes overhead, bouncing off a saturated carpet, lay a colour cast across every face in the hall, which we correct later rather than argue with during.

The laavan go round four times, and that is four different rooms, not one photograph taken again. What the sangat does during the first circuit is not what it does by the fourth. Palla, ardas, the settling and rising of a crowded hall: every one of these keeps a tempo of its own, and following it beats breaking it. Then the register, then langar, then a wholly separate evening problem.

Mostly the former. Nothing during the service is arranged by us at all. Afterwards comes a short stretch of organising relatives into groups, plus a handful of portraits, because those have to exist, and then we return to watching.

Do you and your team cover your heads inside the gurdwara?+

Always, all of us, from the moment we come through the entrance. Spare scarves travel with the kit so nobody is caught short, footwear goes where everybody else's goes, and we conduct ourselves as visitors who are merely holding cameras.

Will you direct us during the Anand Karaj?+

No. Not one word, not one gesture, no raised hand. The service belongs to the granthi and the sangat, and whatever we might prefer photographically comes a distant second to that. Directing starts again outside, once the formal part has closed.

Do you photograph the giving of the palla?+

Yes, though it wants thinking about in advance, because it comes and goes quickly and happens low down among seated people. A position with a clean line to both sets of hands is agreed first, then held while the moment arrives.

Can we book you for the Anand Karaj only?+

You can. A good number of families want the religious portion covered and keep the evening private. That goes in the diary as a short block, and we would still get there early enough that everything is agreed while the hall is quiet.
