Fast trains from London Paddington reach Swindon on the Great Western Main Line, which makes an early anand karaj realistic for guests coming from either end. In the darbar hall the four laavan would be photographed from the side, head covered and shoes off, with the Guru Granth Sahib never used as a backdrop for anything. Sehra bandi, milni and the palla give the day its structure. Stanton House Hotel would take the reception, and a doli farewell reads better on gravel than under a strip light.

Two settings, one day: a Swindon Sikh wedding

Two commissions with a car ride between them: that is the honest shape of the day. Early on you are a visitor somewhere nobody will rearrange on your account, where carpet colour, ceiling height and light fittings were fixed by people holding other priorities. Later you occupy a hired room somewhere around Swindon, and each of those variables reverts to something a person actually chooses.

Where the halves meet is where sets usually come apart. Outfits change, the sun has moved on, faces stop picking up red from a carpet, and pictures that ought to read as a single day begin reading as two separate shoots. Our fix is manual white balance at both ends and a contrast match afterwards, so the two halves sit together on a spread. Ask your evening venue which lights can be dimmed and which cannot, since the reply marks the boundary of what you can shape after dark.

Choora, milni and doli across a Swindon day

Morning belongs to the choora and to a household where nobody has slept. That work is handheld, close and almost entirely undirected. Outdoors, milni wants reach: we stand well back with a telephoto, since two sets of in-laws weighing each other up behave differently once they assume nobody can hear them. A jago night, should you be having one, is a separate job and deserves a separate booking.

Indoors the camera sits at floor height and stops travelling. Nothing is fired, the aperture opens wide, and nobody in the sangat ever finds a lens between themselves and the dais. A palla changes hands low down and quickly, which is a further argument for being seated well before it happens. Langar may be the most photogenic half hour on offer and it is reliably the least photographed. Come evening a doli waits outside; we cross to its far side, so the album shows a family walking away rather than a couple leaving.

Customs shift between buildings, so we presume nothing and ask everything. Nothing is moved, no moment is requested twice, and no light is fired where quiet is expected of everyone present. Later, at Stanton House Hotel, Blunsdon House Hotel or Chiseldon House, we work in a completely different register.

How are our wedding photos delivered to us?+

You get an online gallery first, so relatives anywhere may view and download everything, then an edited selection prepared for print. Album design follows later, after a few weeks in which you work out which pictures matter.

Are you able to work without flash near the Guru Granth Sahib?+

Yes. That is a planning question, not a limitation. Fast glass, a sensitivity setting the sensor genuinely tolerates, and a low still position off at one side. Nothing whatever is fired towards the dais.

Do your packages include a pre-wedding or engagement shoot?+

It can be added. Beyond the pictures there is a practical case: an unhurried hour with a camera beforehand makes the wedding morning much easier. Some couples want that, plenty do not, and either reply suits us.

Can our parents order their own albums or prints?+

Yes, directly, without routing anything through you. Parent albums usually want a different edit in any case, weighted towards relatives and towards daylight hours rather than towards the couple, which tends to be what was actually wanted.

Can you photograph our mehndi night?+

Yes. It works best as its own booking, because it usually lands on another evening in another building. Expect a looser handheld set, close and warm, full of hands, with nobody at any point asked to hold still.
