For the jaimala and the joota chupai we stay close to the fun, because these lighter rituals carry as much of the family's character as the solemn ones. Every tradition has its own rhythm, and our job is to feel that rhythm and photograph inside it rather than imposing a routine of our own on your day.

Swindon railway station is on the Great Western Main Line with fast trains to London Paddington. When there is time for couple portraits, Lydiard Park, a country estate with formal walled gardens and a Palladian house is a favourite, and STEAM, the Museum of the Great Western Railway, housed in a former railway works building makes a memorable setting.

During the most solemn passages we step back and lengthen the lens, so the granthi's words or the sacred fire are photographed from a respectful distance. Whatever your faith, the auspicious hour sets the tempo, and we plan our positions around the muhurat or muhurtham so the sacred minutes are never rushed for a picture. We work quietly around the priest, the granthi or the imam so the ceremony is never disturbed.

The pre-wedding events are often where the most natural photographs come from, and we give them full attention. We capture the lively baraat as the groom arrives, with the dhol, the dancing and the milni. For Muslim families the walima is a warm celebration in its own right, and we cover it in full.
