A nikah is mostly heard rather than seen. Its spoken parts hand a camera almost nothing, and there is a stretch of recitation during which we simply stop; nobody is photographed reading. What stays reliable is the pen. Once a nikah-nama has been signed the day has its one still, framed, unhurried thing, and it is worth two angles and no interruption. Pace is the imam's to set, and nothing is repeated on our account.
Mehndi means working close in a crowded room, palms turned up under whichever lamp sits nearest, shot from arm's length or not at all. Rukhsati is a doorway, backlit, with people crying into the light behind them, so exposure holds the faces and the blown background is simply accepted. Then comes walima, which demands nothing of that sort: a room arranged to be looked at, a couple placed high, and a long line of individual greetings that need photographing one pair at a time.
