Around the sacred fire, the seven steps of the saptapadi bind a Hindu couple together, and we photograph each vow from close enough to feel its weight. The kanyadaan, when a father places his daughter's hand in her husband's, is quiet and full of feeling, and we frame it without ever intruding. For Gujarati families we know the hastamelap and the four mangal pheras and photograph each as you keep it.

The reception is the joyful finale, with speeches, the first dance and the bhangra. For Muslim families the walima is a warm celebration in its own right, and we cover it in full. We photograph the milni, when the two families meet, with all of its warmth.
