Pheras in one family, four laavan in another, a third whose centre is a nikah-nama and its witnesses: the photographic problem keeps one shape across all three. There is a brief, immovable centre, surrounded by hours that move. What differs is ownership of the room. A committee owns a gurdwara. A priest owns the mandap. Families own a nikah. That gets established before anything else is planned, since it governs our positions and the kit we may carry through the door.
The rest travels well. A baraat behaves like a baraat whether the drum leads into a barn or onto a hotel forecourt. Mehndi reliably delivers the week's finest light in the house's worst room. A doli and a rukhsati are the same feeling photographed under different words. What we never do is blend them, because one family keeps one tradition, and it gets photographed the way that particular family keeps it.
