A walima puts you in front of a staged sofa, a lit backdrop and uplighters in whatever colour the hire company supplied, all of them throwing magenta or green onto skin unless corrected or overpowered. Our own lighting goes up and balances against it. Earlier in the week a mehndi inverts the problem: daylight, hands, cones, plenty of laughing, covered close and quietly. Rukhsati finishes at a doorway with family pressing in, and the only workable position is behind whoever is leaving.
