Consent given and received, the two families become one, and we capture that joining as it genuinely happens rather than asking anyone to repeat it for the camera. Some of the most moving frames of a nikah are the smallest, a father's hand on a shoulder or a whispered word before the ijab-e-qubool, and we look for every one of them. For many families the qazi conducts the ceremony, and we photograph it exactly as you keep it.

We photograph the sanchaq and the exchange of gifts between the families with all of their warmth. From the first spoonful of the sanchaq to the last dance of the walima, we tell the whole arc of the celebration rather than isolated pieces of it. The mangni, the engagement that begins the journey, is one we are glad to cover when families ask.
