Our approach is relaxed and documentary, so you can be present in your own Anand Karaj rather than posing for it. Inside the gurdwara we never turn our back to the Guru Granth Sahib, shooting discreetly from the sides and the back. We anticipate each part of the Anand Karaj, so the milni, the four laavan and the ardaas are never missed.

Ampthill is a Georgian market town near Woburn, its narrow streets lined with Georgian buildings and thatched cottages, holding a market charter dating from 1219. Ampthill no longer has its own station, so travellers use nearby Flitwick on the Midland Main Line, with the town served by the A507. For portraits away from the celebration, Ampthill Park, landscaped in the 18th century by Capability Brown, with woodland and views from the Greensand Ridge works beautifully, and Katherine's Cross in Ampthill Park, a Gothic memorial to Katherine of Aragon on the site of the vanished Ampthill Castle adds a real sense of place.

We know the order of the Anand Karaj by heart, from the kirtan to the ardaas and the four laavan. As the ragis sing each laav, the couple walk slowly around the Guru Granth Sahib, and we photograph it quietly from the side. The four laavan, each a hymn the couple circle the Guru Granth Sahib for, are the heart of the ceremony, and we capture them with reverence.

From the turmeric of the maiyan to the music of the jaggo, the events set the tone for the wedding. We capture the family moments around the bride and groom, not just the rituals. The kaleere tied to the bride's choora carry their own meaning, and we photograph the ritual with care.
