Nothing about a gurdwara bends to suit a photographer. Its windows sit where an architect put them, its carpet throws back whatever colour it throws, seating means carpet rather than chairs, and the sangat decides which square metre a camera may occupy. Adaptation is therefore the opening half of a Luton anand karaj: read the hall, reach for focal length instead of proximity, be settled long before the couple walk in, and accept the room as given.
Evening is the reverse discipline. A banqueting suite arrives empty, so its light becomes something you choose rather than something you inherit, and every decision falls back to us. Days like this open a good while earlier than the wedding morning. Jago nights are loud, handheld, unrepeatable. Mehndi holds still by comparison and rewards patience. Then comes the milni, usually outdoors whatever Bedfordshire is doing, garlands and embraces arriving in pairs across a car park. That sequence is the weekend's hardest to shoot cleanly, because it keeps moving and no announcement tells you who steps up next. A baraat feeding into it doubles the crowd without doubling the space.
Inside, four laavan mean four circuits along one identical route. Photographing them identically is the easy error. Height and angle change between each pass, and the palla stays in frame throughout, since that is the thread carrying the meaning. During ardas we withdraw towards the back wall, shutter quiet, and stop moving altogether. Langar afterwards is warm and chaotic and full of what families keep. Nobody crowds the doli, ever.
