Half the angles a photographer would reach for are simply unavailable, because Guru Granth Sahib presides over the hall. No lens goes higher than it, and none intrudes on the line between it and the seated congregation. So we settle on a low position off to one side well before the anand karaj opens, then stay in it. For most of what follows you are looking at the backs of two heads, which is why the expressions we do get have to be earned sideways.
Each laav is a circuit ending in a bow, handing you four near-identical opportunities. Changing height, changing side and changing focal length between them is what makes the four read as progress instead of one frame repeated. Milni earlier is loud and quick, a run of pairings that will not wait. Langar is where pictures of the wider sangat come from. The doli is short, unstageable and emotional, so we are outside and ready before it begins.
