We photograph the nikah with quiet care, from the imam opening the contract to the moment the couple are declared married, holding the stillness of the prayer hall exactly as it settles.

Somali, Turkish, Arab and South Asian families each shape these evenings differently, and we learn the order of yours before we arrive so nothing is missed. The baraat is pure energy, and we photograph the music, the dancing and the grin of the groom brought forward at the centre of the procession. Prayers and Qur'an recitation open several of the smaller gatherings in many families, and we photograph those quietly and briefly, then put the camera down until the moment has finished.
