Three traditions, one photographic problem

Three traditions, three names for the central rite, and much the same photographic problem in each: a fixed focal point, a couple who spend long stretches with their backs to the guests, and people who cross in front of you without noticing they have. What changes is where authority sits. It may rest with the building, or with whoever officiates, or with the family, and settling that question before the morning separates covering a rite from disturbing one.

Around the rite, the celebrations are common ground. An evening of mehndi, a sangeet, a dholki: those are parties, and party pictures look nothing like ceremony pictures, so kit and manner both change. The departure, whatever your family calls it, arrives when everyone is tired and lasts under a minute, so we take up position for it before anybody thinks to announce that it is starting. Nobody gets a second run at it.

Yes. The sequence is planned in advance: the point at which the couple will rise, when the palla is placed, and what the darbar hall expects of anybody holding a camera. Planning it that way means the pictures can be made without anyone being posed.

We are getting married in Bedford. Will you research our venue?+

We start with what your venue publishes: The Tithe Barn at The Kingfisher on Cardington Road, for example, is an 800-year-old barn with a riverside ceremony space called The Jetty on the River Great Ouse. From there we ask for your timings and floor plan, and on the day we arrive early to walk each room before the family does.

How do you handle the low light inside many ceremony venues?+

Fast lenses, high ISO, and bodies chosen for how they behave when there is very little to work with. Flash goes nowhere near a ceremony. Where a room is genuinely dark we would sooner accept grain than take a photograph nobody wanted taken.

Do you photograph the haldi or pithi ceremony?+

Haldi is messy, informal and usually happens at home, which makes it the most relaxed hour of pictures in the entire week. Wear clothes you are happy to write off, and ignore us while it goes on.

Do you cover smaller Asian celebrations, not just large weddings?+

Yes. An engagement, a mehndi on its own, a naming, an anniversary dinner. Small events often make better photographs than big ones, because the room stays quiet enough that you can see what people are genuinely doing.
