We are ready for the giving of the sindoor and the tying of the mangalsutra at a Hindu ceremony. From the kanyadaan to the saptapadi, or the first laav to the last, the ceremony tells its own story and we follow it. For Sikh couples, the Anand Karaj and the four laavan in the gurdwara are the heart of the day, photographed with the calm the Guru Granth Sahib deserves.

The haldi or pithi is turmeric, colour and mischief in equal measure, and it often gives us the warmest and most unguarded frames of the whole wedding. For Muslim families the walima is a generous celebration in its own right, and we cover it as fully as the nikah that precedes it. The reception is the joyful finale, with speeches, the first dance and the bhangra.
