The gurdwara settles most of this before we arrive. Ceiling height, window position, floor level and the spots where a camera may reasonably sit are properties of the building, and none of them negotiate. We therefore work low and from the back, on fast glass, with nothing added, taking the colour of the room as we find it rather than arguing with it.

The reception then hands you the reverse problem: a space with nothing fixed in it, where every choice belongs to you. Where the top table goes, what colour the uplighting runs at, whether the cake sits under a spotlight or beside a window. The seam between those two jobs is easy to underestimate, because an hour vanishes into changed clothes, a drive, and a flat patch of energy that nobody scheduled. Half the available positions vanish before anything is framed at all, and what remains is oblique, low and some way back. Watch the palla: it announces the walking about a second ahead of the walking itself.

The milni runs earlier and outdoors, men who have never met embracing in an order nobody can predict, so we stop anticipating and shoot it loose. Langar is quiet, horizontal and full of hands, and it photographs far better than couples expect. The doli shuts the morning down. We photograph it from distance, because a camera pushed into that doorway helps nobody. The jago belongs to the previous night, pure movement, and it wants a slower shutter than instinct suggests plus a white balance you have locked by hand.
