Inside a congregation's own hall you photograph the room as it stands, from whatever height the seating permits, with nothing of your own switched on. The hired room afterwards is the reverse; nearly every variable in it belongs to you. Carry one approach across both and it shows after dark, when somebody is still creeping about as though prayers were under way.
So the day gets split and attention budgeted twice over. Mornings run on anticipation and restraint. Everything in that hall takes place low down, and the camera goes low with it. You settle at the edge, off the aisle, and remain there; nobody is going to clear a centre aisle so a photographer can walk up it. Silence buys more access in that hall than explanation ever does. So it is long lenses from the perimeter, both eyes open for the instant the palla is passed across, and an acceptance that a few angles are simply unavailable.
Families rarely expect the four laavan to pass as quickly as they do, and no interval of any kind arrives between them. We watch the walking, and the front row instead; the couple themselves are looking downward throughout. Either side of it the job changes altogether: a milni outdoors beforehand should weather permit, a doli finished before the cars are loaded, and an evening room holding no usable light until somebody makes some.
