Biggleswade station is on the East Coast Main Line, with Thameslink trains from London, so a sangat can travel up from the capital for a morning anand karaj. Milni comes first and it defeats anyone who has not asked for the order. It is a run of paired greetings, uncle to uncle, and nobody announces who is next, so we get the list from one relative on each side beforehand and stand where both men's faces are visible rather than their backs. The baraat that brings everyone in is loud, mobile and usually the last outdoor light of the morning, which is worth remembering when portraits are being scheduled.
Inside, the laavan are four circuits and the temptation is four identical frames, so each one takes a different height or a different foreground. The palla passing between hands is small, quick, and easily lost behind shoulders. Certain angles simply do not exist for a photographer in that room: nobody works from behind the Guru Granth Sahib. Nothing about that is open to discussion. Langar gets photographed as work: hands serving, rows filling, plates moving.
