We photograph the small moments as carefully as the grand ones, the choora and kaleere as well as the four laavan. We blend candid storytelling with a handful of timeless portraits taken away from the bustle of the gurdwara. We move quietly around the darbar sahib, capturing the four laavan as they happen rather than staging them.

Biggleswade station, the oldest in Bedfordshire, sits on the East Coast Main Line towards London King's Cross. For pre-wedding and couple portraits, we love spots such as The Swiss Garden at nearby Old Warden, a Regency landscaped garden with winding paths and ponds, with Biggleswade Common, an expanse of grassland stretching along the eastern bank of the River Ivel close by for a striking backdrop.

From maiyan to doli

We are ready for the palla, when the bride's father places the sash in the couple's hands before the laavan. The four laavan, each a hymn the couple circle the Guru Granth Sahib for, are the heart of the ceremony, and we capture them with reverence. The kirtan and shabads that fill the gurdwara are as much a part of the story as the laavan themselves.

The reception is the joyful finale, with speeches, the first dance, bhangra and giddha. We capture the groom's arrival for the milni, surrounded by dancing family and the beat of the dhol. We photograph the bridal preparations with a gentle, unobtrusive eye.
