Twenty five years of Muslim weddings, now in Walsall

Walsall is a Black Country town. Across the West Midlands we photograph Muslim weddings in mosques, banqueting halls, hotels and marquees, and the venues around Bloxwich, Willenhall and Darlaston are ones we travel to gladly. Turkish and Arab ceremonies often run shorter and differently structured than a South Asian nikah, so we ask beforehand rather than arriving with assumptions about when the important seconds will fall.

Where the ceremony is conducted in Arabic and translated for relatives who do not follow it, we photograph both the imam and the faces working to keep up, because both belong in the story. Small documents matter. The nikah-nama on the table, the pen, the register and the witnesses' signatures are photographed cleanly, because that paper is what turns a gathering into a marriage. We pace ourselves deliberately across a long day, so the eye behind the camera is as sharp at the rukhsati as it was at the morning mehndi.

Walsall is a Black Country market town with a long history of leather goods manufacturing. Walsall railway station connects to Birmingham and Rugeley, with the M6 running through the borough near junctions 9 and 10. For portraits away from the celebration, Walsall Arboretum, a Victorian park close to the town centre works beautifully, and The New Art Gallery Walsall beside the canal basin adds a real sense of place.

The customs that make a Muslim wedding

As the imam leads the ceremony, we work slowly from the side, keeping our movements low so the words of the nikah are never disturbed. Somali ceremonies often carry a distinctive rhythm of recitation and response, and we listen for it rather than working to a template borrowed from another community's wedding. Twenty five years of nikah ceremonies means we know each stage, so we are in place when the khutbah ends, the acceptance is given and the dua begins.

The walima table, the cake and the formal moments are covered, but we stay just as alert to the unplanned ones, the uncle mid-dance and the cousins laughing. Walima is the groom's family's invitation to the community, and it deserves to be photographed as a proper occasion: the entrance, the stage, the speeches, the meal and the room slowly filling. A step back is where we work for the rukhsati, photographing the farewell without crowding it, so the weight of leaving home is held with the tenderness it deserves.
