During the dholki the drum passes from lap to lap, and we photograph the clapping circle, the improvised verses and the women singing late into the evening. Dhol players are photographed properly during the baraat, the sticks blurring, the effort and the joy of the men dancing the groom in. Entrances at the walima are stage-managed, announced and applauded, and they happen once. We are set for it well beforehand, with the doors, the walk and the reaction all planned for.

Henna is at its darkest on the morning after the mehndi, so that is when we photograph the hands and feet properly, before the day gets hold of everyone. Where the bride's side is separate, so the dressing, the henna and the family around her are fully kept.
Arrival of the baraat is the first big set piece, and it is loud, mobile and unrepeatable, so we work inside it on foot rather than watching from the pavement. The walima, hosted by the groom's family, is the reception, and we cover the entrance, the meal and the celebration in full.
