Inside the darbar hall the rules do not bend, shoes off, head covered, no lens in front of the Guru Granth Sahib and no interruption of the ardas. Four laavan, kirtan and sikhia would be photographed from the side and at a distance. Tonbridge Castle grounds, with the surviving medieval gatehouse behind, would give the couple's portraits a proper setting.

We add nothing to that room. No stand, no bounce off the ceiling, no reflector held by anybody, since nobody hands a visiting photographer licence to rearrange a place of worship. The sangat did not come to watch a crew at work. What remains is position, timing and noise. A mechanical shutter travels a long way through a quiet hall, so we go silent and accept the small technical penalty that comes with it. Where we may stand gets fixed in advance with the hall's own committee, and then honoured.
Then the day changes hands. The evening room takes any lighting you please, and the freedom is the trap, because a hall dressed for a large sit down photographs like a hall unless somebody has decided early where light will come from. We settle that during the gap rather than after the first course. Milni outside, the doli at the door, langar in between, all of it running on borrowed time and covered as it falls.
