Fitting in with a gurdwara's own rhythm

Half of this wedding sits inside a building nobody hired. Its proportions, its glazing and its habits predate every plan you have made, and our job there is to fit in without asking for one thing to be moved. The other half happens wherever you booked. There, everything that governs a photograph can be negotiated: ceiling height, how bright the lamps run, when the speeches start. Couples usually over-plan the first and under-plan the second.

Kent is the half you control. Ground rising towards the North Downs lends late afternoon a long, low light that no flat town centre can supply, so it is worth reserving fifteen minutes of the evening for it. Low to the ground in the darbar hall

Everyone present is sitting down at carpet level, so a camera used from an adult's eye line stares down at the entire room. We drop to our knees, stay low, and pick focal lengths long enough to leave the aisle uncrossed. The laavan permits no wandering at all: while the couple circle and the ragis sing, a moving photographer would be the only thing stirring. Two vantage points are settled beforehand and we live with what they give.

Outside that one hour, the day slackens off. Families meet in daylight for the milni, on a forecourt or a strip of tarmac, and those unglamorous frames are often the warmest of the whole morning. Langar goes down on the floor and gets the same restraint as the hall did. Then the journey out. The seam sits at the doli, where one family closes its morning and another opens its evening; strip lighting gives way to whatever we build inside the hired room.

Sikh weddings start early. Are you happy with a dawn start?+

Gladly. Starting in the dark is normal work for us. Arriving while a household is still half awake is far better than arriving to find it dressed. Say when the first car leaves and we will have been shooting well before it.

How do you make sure our photographs are never lost?+

Your files never sit in one location. Both cards from each body are copied that night to drives that then travel apart, and a third copy reaches remote storage; no card is formatted until all three exist.

Are you insured to work at our gurdwara and venue in Sevenoaks?+

We hold both liability and indemnity cover, and a certificate reaches anybody who asks. Request it the moment you book, since a venue may want that document weeks in hand rather than presented at the door.
