Documenting Tamil weddings in Hackney

Hackney is a creative east London borough. We travel throughout Greater London for mandapam ceremonies, and Islington, Tower Hamlets are all familiar to us. Couples come to us from across London and the surrounding area, and Hackney is firmly on our patch.

We work discreetly around the Iyer and Iyengar priests, never intruding on the moment the thali is tied. We move quietly around the mandapam, capturing the thali tying as it happens rather than staging it. We photograph with warmth and respect, mindful of the meaning behind the thali and the saptapadi.

Much of our work takes us across Greater London; Hackney, a creative east London borough, and the towns around it, including Islington, Tower Hamlets, are very familiar to us. We also cover nearby Hammersmith and Fulham and Haringey. In and around Hackney, we have photographed at venues such as Hackney Town Hall and Shoreditch Town Hall.

Hackney is a creative east London borough known for its independent shops, markets and a strong arts and music scene. Hackney Central and Hackney Downs stations link the borough via London Overground services. For relaxed couple photographs, we like Victoria Park, one of London's oldest public parks with lakes and open lawns, and The Hackney Empire, a Grade II* listed Edwardian theatre gives the day a strong sense of Hackney.

The oonjal, the gentle swing ceremony with its songs and warding off of the evil eye, is a moment we capture with warmth. We are mindful of every family's customs at the mandapam, Iyer, Iyengar or Sri Lankan Tamil. We photograph the lighting of the homam and the blessings of the priests with respect.

The pre-wedding events are often where the most natural photographs come from, and we give them full attention. The bride's entrance in Kanjeevaram silk and temple jewellery is a highlight we love to capture. The mehndi is intimate and detailed, and we photograph both the henna and the laughter around it.
