Nikah and walima photography in Esher

Esher is an affluent Surrey town with grand venues. From the smallest prayer room to the largest banqueting hall, the venues of Surrey vary enormously, and we have photographed across Walton-on-Thames, Cobham and Thames Ditton in nearly all of them. A female photographer can stay with the bride throughout the ceremony where the celebration is segregated, so the women's view of the nikah is recorded as fully as the men's.

Through the nikah signing we keep our distance and our lenses long, so you and the qazi are never crowded and the vows carry the weight they are meant to. Where the men's and women's sides are kept apart, our second and female photographers let us cover both at once, so neither celebration goes unrecorded. We arrive early for the mehndi, stay late for the walima and keep pace with every part of the celebration.

Esher is an affluent town in the Elmbridge district of Surrey, historically a stagecoach stop on the old London to Portsmouth road, now the A3. Esher railway station on the South West Main Line, about 14 miles from London Waterloo, served by South Western Railway. We often take couples to Claremont Landscape Garden, a National Trust garden with a turf amphitheatre and serpentine lake just outside Esher for a few quiet portraits, and Sandown Park Racecourse, a well known horse racing venue in Esher is a lovely backdrop nearby.

Consent given and received, the two families become one, and we capture that joining as it genuinely happens rather than asking anyone to repeat it for the camera. The rukhsati, when the bride leaves with the groom, is the most tender moment, and we photograph it gently. The witnesses whose signatures complete the nikah-nama are part of the story too, and we make sure the people who make the marriage official appear in the pictures that record it.

The henna of the mehndi is intricate and detailed, and we photograph both the design and the laughter around it. Where the celebrations are segregated, we cover the men's and ladies' sides with equal care. Nothing on the day is more tender than the rukhsati, when the bride leaves her parents' home, and we photograph the embraces and the tears from a gentle, respectful distance.
