Everything turns on the nikah, the contract that makes two people husband and wife, and we give its few quiet minutes the attention the whole day is built around. We work quietly around the imam so the nikah is never disturbed. We are mindful of every family's customs at the nikah, Pakistani, Bengali, Arab or Turkish.

We photograph the bridal preparations with a gentle, unobtrusive eye. The reception and walima are the joyful finale, with speeches, family and dancing. Long before the nikah, the sanchaq sees gifts and sweets carried between the two families, and we photograph the exchange with all the warmth and ceremony it carries.
