Valentines Mansion is listed, and the practical consequence of that for a portrait is that the background becomes the one thing in the frame nobody is allowed to change. A modern building gets repainted, re-signed and re-glazed every few years; a house standing since 1696 and protected by its listing will look the same at your sitting as it will in ten years. That makes it worth planning against properly rather than turning up and hoping. Old frontages weather towards the middle of the tonal range, and that is a mixed blessing. It means exposure can be set for the face alone with no risk of a blown highlight behind the ear. It also means the head can merge with the wall when the two sit in the same band. There are two ways out of that and they pull in opposite directions: move the sitter several paces forward so the wall goes soft and falls back, or dress against it. Deep navy, bottle green and a clean off-white all keep their edge in front of a weathered frontage; rust, camel and terracotta do not. Season then decides how loud that wall is. Low winter sun rakes along an old facade and every joint, pit and moulding throws a small shadow of its own, which is a busy field to put a face in front of. Flat overcast renders the same wall as an even ground, which makes it the better day for a tight head and shoulders frame and the worse one for the open park.
