Capturing your pet's character in Ilford

Pet sessions cover Ilford, Barkingside, Chadwell Heath and Newbury Park. Dogs are photographed at Valentines Park, or on the ground they already walk every day. Cats, rabbits and elderly animals stay indoors at your address, which is the only place most of them behave normally. Tell us the age and the temperament first, because those decide the ground more than the breed does.

One piece of timing does more for the pictures than anything else: bring the dog out after its usual walk, not before. A dog with a mile already behind it will hold a look, while a fresh one spends the first twenty minutes checking the park for news.

What we offer

Pet photography in Ilford

01

Fast Turnaround

Dogs at Valentines Park; cats, rabbits and elderly dogs photographed indoors at your own address instead.

02

Pets With Their Owners

We stop early rather than late, because the last ten minutes of a long session are never the good ones.

03

Rescue Dogs

Tell us at booking whether the lead can come off, since it decides which ground we use.

Local and experienced

Reassuringly patient with pets in Ilford

Sessions are short by design, often forty minutes in total, and we stop while the animal is still interested rather than pushing on to fill an hour. If the weather turns we would sooner move the date than photograph a wet and thoroughly fed-up dog.

Bring whichever toy or treat genuinely holds attention. The set you receive is weighted towards frames where the animal is doing something, since a dog told to sit still is rarely a dog that looks like itself.

Good to know

Pet Photographer in Ilford, FAQs

Yes, and we enjoy it. A very dark pet is a rewarding challenge, and years behind the camera mean we know just how to light one so the coat and eyes keep all their detail. We take the same care with white and pale-coated animals. Around Ilford we plan for landmarks such as Valentines Mansion, a Grade II listed house built in 1696.

Of course. Anxious cats just need patience, and we have plenty. We keep everything quiet and calm, let your cat wander and sniff at its own speed, and wait until curiosity replaces caution before we start. Gentleness reveals a shy animal's true nature. Getting to Ilford is straightforward for us: Ilford station sits on the Great Eastern Main Line and is served by the Elizabeth line into central London.

That is completely normal and rarely a problem. We work with a lively dog rather than against it, catching its character between the games. For dogs from Ilford, we happily embrace the action too, with spirited shots mid-leap. Stillness is never needed for a great portrait.

Yes, and in Ilford it is the most common pet booking of all. We take the frames with the dog in them at the start, because a dog has a limited budget of good behaviour and spends it fast, then carry on with the family once it has settled at somebody's feet. Bring a second adult who can hold a lead just outside the frame. Valentines Park suits this better than a house.

A set of carefully edited photographs that show your pet exactly as it is. From that gallery you are free to order prints, framed pictures or canvases for your walls. We work to a fast turnaround, so there is very little waiting before you see the results. For outdoor photographs in Ilford we would suggest Valentines Park, the former grounds of Valentines Mansion.

Ilford is the main town of the London Borough of Redbridge and has a large, long established South Asian community. Valentines Park is the ground for dog work in Ilford, and the fact that it sits inside a town rather than out on the edge of one changes the plan in two ways. The first is the boundary. Ground inside a town has roads somewhere beyond it, so whether the lead comes off at all is settled before we start, not halfway through when something interesting appears. If it stays on, we photograph so the lead runs down the same line as the body, where it reads as a thin vertical rather than a diagonal cutting across the chest, and we work out towards the middle of the open ground rather than along its edges, where noise from beyond the park keeps pulling ears and eyes off frame. The second is what to do about a dark coat. Black, deep brindle and chocolate fur are the hardest things in this work, and the common mistake is to put the sun behind the camera, which fills the coat evenly and leaves one flat dark mass sitting on dark grass. Turn the animal so the sun is behind it instead and a bright rim runs along the spine, over the skull and through the ear edges, and that outline is what a viewer actually reads as form. Underexpose slightly to protect the rim and lift the shadows afterwards; done the other way round it does not recover. Cats, rabbits and stiff old dogs are photographed indoors at your address, because a sore hip and an unfamiliar park make a poor combination.
