So we change the treatment on purpose, with a different lens set, a different working height and a different slice of the afternoon, so that the finished album reads as a week and not a repeat.

The other thing worth buying is the gaps. Coverage tends to get bought around the ceremonies, yet the hours between them are when a family is least guarded: loading cars, laying out food, sitting in a kitchen in Winslow or Padbury while somebody upstairs is still being dressed. Whatever tradition your family follows, one question decides our coverage: who holds authority in that room, and what does their presence rule out. It might be a priest whose fire nobody may cross. It might be scripture that fixes where a lens can stand at an anand karaj. It might be an imam and a short spoken exchange nobody will repeat for a camera. We settle that before we settle anything else.

After that it is ordinary photography done carefully. A mehndi is a low, warm, indoor evening that rewards a wide lens and patience, and it holds more of the week's laughter than the ceremonies do. A reception is a build: the light goes up while the chairs are empty, speeches get a place agreed in advance, and then we leave it alone. Where a weekend joins two traditions, we take instructions from both families rather than assuming that one covers the other.
