Bring the dog if it counts as family, plus a clean top for whichever child is likeliest to wear their lunch, and little else besides. Food stays hidden until the whole-group frames are finished, because an unzipping bag ends the concentration of every child present at once.
The full edited take comes back to you rather than a shortlist somebody else has picked, colour throughout and monochrome where it belongs. Where a small child gives up early we stop there and pick the session up on a second date, at no further cost.

- Lesnes Abbey recreation area. The recreation area at Lesnes Abbey Woods has a large play area, a junior BMX track, parkour, basketball courts and an outdoor gym. 2
- Lamorbey Park and The Glade. Lamorbey Park in Sidcup is a 57-hectare park around the Grade II listed Lamorbey House, and its public part includes The Glade, a 1920s landscape with a large lake; the park was added to the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens in 1988. 3
- Danson House is a Grade I listed Palladian villa built by Sir John Boyd in 1766 to designs by Sir Robert Taylor; English Heritage named it the most significant building at risk in London in 1995, and it reopened after restoration in 2005. 4
- Foots Cray Meadows and Lesnes Abbey. Bexley Council lists Foots Cray Meadows, with its Five Arch Bridge over the River Cray, Sidcup Place and the ruins of Lesnes Abbey among the borough's most popular parks for wedding photography, and permission is applied for through the council. 5

We begin from where you have parked rather than out at the centre of a field, so buggies, bags and a tired child cross the grass once only, and all the equipment is carried by us. Tell us at booking if soft ground is difficult for anybody coming, and the spot gets chosen around that.
They really do not need to. We turn the session into a game and photograph whatever happens, rather than asking for a smile on cue. The best frames tend to come once children forget about the camera.

The lawns at Danson Park are why families book it, and those same lawns are the thing to plan for, because open ground of that size swallows people. Photographed from any distance a family turns into six small figures on a wide green field, which is a picture of a park containing a family rather than a picture of the family. So most of the hour is worked in close, tight enough that the group fills the frame and the park is only a soft wash of green behind, and one wide frame is kept at the end as the record of where you were. Wide ground does a second thing, which is to leave a shy child with no cover. In a wood or a garden there is something to stand behind. On a lawn there is not, and a five year old who has decided against being photographed will simply say so. That is fine and it gets planned for: the opening stretch is not really photography, it is a walk towards the water while the camera stays boring. Danson House gives the one squared-up frame of the day, everybody lined up and facing front against a symmetrical stone frontage. It takes four minutes and it belongs early, not at the finish, because patience is a budget and by the last quarter of an hour it has been spent. If rain has set the day against you, the Northwood room covers the same ground under a roof.
