Local and experienced
A Hanwell portrait should look like you on a good day, so the retouching stays light and natural rather than heavy. A few frames are shown on the back of the camera as the sitting goes on, which helps you relax once you see it working.
Solo, couple and group portraits can all be set up, in one sitting or across several backdrops. Light retouching comes as standard, leaving skin and features real while small distractions are removed.

Good to know
Yes. When your favourite portraits are chosen in the online gallery, prints, frames, canvases and albums can all be ordered. A large framed portrait suits a living room wall, while a small album gathers a whole session together. On top of that, your digital portraits come prepared for both screen and print.
Yes. A graduation portrait is a portrait session planned around your gown, hood and any certificate or scroll. The studio gives a classic, formal look, and if you would like a few more relaxed frames, a location near Hanwell, such as the canal locks, adds variety. Bring the gown pressed and ready.
Your portraits appear in an online gallery after the session, where you can take your time choosing. Once you have selected favourites, they are retouched with a natural touch and delivered as files suited to web and print. If there is a date you need them by, say so when you book.
Yes. Someone close to you can join for part of the session, which helps many people relax and adds a few shared frames to your individual portraits. A walk along the locks or under the viaduct near Hanwell suits a pair particularly well. Mention it at booking so time is set aside.
The cost of a portrait session is given on request by phone or WhatsApp. It helps to mention whether you would like the studio or a location near Hanwell, how many people are involved, and what you hope to end up with, so the information you receive fits your plans.

It sits close to West Ealing and Northfields, which we cover too. Hanwell is easy to reach from Northwood for either a studio portrait or one taken out on location.
Hanwell's six-lock flight on the Grand Union Canal and Brunel's Wharncliffe Viaduct over the Brent Valley both make striking backdrops for an outdoor portrait. Guides
Portrait preparation guides from our journal for Hanwell sitters.
Hanwell has an unusual amount of architecture and water for a portrait, all within a short walk. The Wharncliffe Viaduct, Brunel's first major structural design, carries the railway twenty metres above the Brent Valley, and its tall brick arches make a strong, graphic backdrop for a full-length portrait taken from the meadows below. The Hanwell flight of six locks on the Grand Union Canal offers another set of textures: lock gates, brickwork, water and towpath, climbing towards Brunel's Three Bridges at the top. Brent Lodge Park, the much-loved Bunny Park, has a maze made from two thousand yews, which gives a deep green, even background ideal for head and shoulders frames. Under the viaduct, the arches cut out overhead light, so a portrait there works best with the subject standing just inside the shade, lit by the open sky beyond. Along the locks, the water throws light back upwards, flattering in the afternoon but a source of glare at midday. Smart shoes are fine on the towpath, though the meadows by the river can be soft after rain. When a cleaner or more formal result is wanted, or the weather closes in, the studio at The Broadway in Northwood Hills is about 7 miles from Hanwell, with parking close by and Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line two minutes away.
At the studio
Hanwell sitters will find the portrait studio about 7 miles away at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, near Northwood Hills station. Portrait, family and headshot sittings there are booked in advance, and old prints, negatives and frames can be brought in for restoration, scanning and framing in house. Passport and ID photos need no appointment. Hanwell portrait clients can visit from 10:30 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday, or 13:00 to 18:00 on Sunday.
Kaushik Bathia, FBIPP and FMPA, takes every Hanwell portrait in person and has run his Northwood studio since 2001, winning five European Kodak Gold Awards.
