Jago runs loud and handheld the night before, lit by whatever the kitchen happens to have on, and it rewards a quick lens ahead of any plan. Mehndi is slower and closer, and the honest frames are of the women applying it, not of the finished pattern. Milni puts two families into pairs outdoors, and the embraces arrive quicker than names can be checked, so we shoot it as one sequence and sort it afterwards.
From the opening of the anand karaj, every decision the camera makes answers to a floor plan it cannot alter. Four laavan are sung, the palla is held, and for half of each round the couple have their backs to most of the room, and we therefore take the return leg rather than the departure, holding the same spot until it comes round. The day loosens at langar. The doli we take from a distance; that one is the family's.
