With a Muslim wedding the opening conversation concerns the floor plan, not the light: one hall or two, a partition or a full separation with its own entrance, and whether any lens is welcome at the nikah itself or only once the signing starts. Each of those answers changes how we plan the day, and none of them is a decision anybody can take on the morning itself.

A large suite can often be divided, which helps, though a divided room is really two rooms sharing one lighting rig and one power supply, and that rig will favour one of them. Ask which side it favours. Ask also where the camera stops, since a line agreed weeks in advance saves an argument conducted in front of everybody.

What happens during the nikah

A nikah is short in a way that catches people out. It needs an imam, the ijab put to each side, qubool spoken once and often barely audibly, two witnesses and a nikah-nama signed at the close. No procession leads into any of that, and frequently no warning arrives that it has begun. You are in position already or you are simply absent. The signing is the single part with a fixed location, which is why so much of the coverage rests on it.

Mangni and the mehndi come earlier and behave conventionally: home rooms, colour, hands, noise. Mahr is spoken of rather than shown. The walima reverses the nikah in every respect, being a lit and staged event with an entrance, a sofa, a cake and speeches, all of which can be planned for and lit like any reception. Rukhsati closes the day, and a baraat, where a family keeps one, opens it.
