Most commercial work in a borough like this comes down to a shopfront and the people behind it. Bexley is settled and suburban, and its business base is independent firms and trade businesses serving south-east London and the Kent border, many of them long established and wanting pictures that look current without pretending they opened last month. Exteriors are harder than they look, for two reasons, neither of them optical. A shopfront gets photographed from the pavement opposite, so whatever sits at the kerb in front of it lands in shot, and the hour therefore gets chosen for the parking rather than for the sun. Plate glass also throws the street behind the photographer straight back into the frame, which is why these are often made at dusk with the interior lit and the shop showing through its own window instead of mirroring the road. Inside, the constraint changes. A suburban unit is rarely deep, so there is no room to stand back and the wide view has to be taken from a corner. Staff photographed at their own counter look more like themselves than the same people stood against a plain backdrop, provided the overhead strips go off first, since those drop a flat cast over everything and nobody looks well under them. The A2 crossing the borough means the running order can follow the light rather than the map.
