A family session usually means people arriving from several directions, and grandparents who no longer drive, or who would rather not take a car into a busy town centre on a Saturday, can get themselves to a tram stop without anyone organising a lift. Everyone converges on one spot at one time, which removes the wait that normally burns through a small child's patience before a camera has even been lifted. It also gives an exit. Toddlers finish abruptly rather than gradually, and knowing the way home is a short walk to a platform rather than a hunt for wherever the car was left means we can genuinely stop the moment attention has gone.
