Photographing pets in Croydon

Dogs make up most of this work, and it happens where the animal is comfortable: Lloyd Park for those with room to run, the streets and gardens of Addiscombe, Waddon or Selhurst for those who do better close to home. Cats and smaller animals stay put for it, since a strange room only produces a picture of a frightened animal.

What decides most Croydon sessions is the angle of light against coat colour. A dark coat needs light coming in low from the side before any texture appears, which puts the session near the start or the close of the day, and that gets agreed when the slot is chosen instead of discovered on the grass.

Twenty-five years behind the lens

Reassuringly patient with pets in Croydon

We photograph in bursts of a few minutes with a pause between, because concentration in a dog is a resource that runs down and does not refill on the day. Bring the treats that work at home and, if you can, a second person the animal will look at.

Frames are made from the dog's eye level, which means kneeling in whatever the ground is doing. You receive the sharp alert frames and the daft ones, edited, with any training line taken off the grass.

Pet Photographer in Croydon, FAQs

Because what you get is a plan rather than a hope. For Croydon that means Lloyd Park, reached by tram so the dog is not walked through the town centre first, a slot near one end of the day instead of the flat light at noon, and two or three spots inside the park picked on the day for the ground your dog is happiest on. Heavy rain moves the booking rather than ruins it.

We love to. Puppies and kittens change so quickly, and a session near Croydon preserves those precious first weeks. We keep everything soft and playful, working in short bursts and letting the little one wander, so its character shines through in every frame.

No. Energy is far easier to work with than fear. It does change the order: the running frames come first, before the edge has gone off, and the settled ones later. Bring whatever it will genuinely recall for. A large park gives room to let a dog go properly, and a long training line covers the gap when recall is unreliable.

Yes, and we enjoy it. A very dark pet is a rewarding challenge, and years behind the camera mean we know just how to light one so the coat and eyes keep all their detail. We take the same care with white and pale-coated animals. We cover Croydon and nearby Addiscombe, Waddon and Selhurst.

We do. As well as your edited digital gallery, there are fine prints, framed pictures and canvases to choose from, ready to hang in your Croydon home. We will happily talk you through the sizes and finishes that will look best on your walls.

A dog that arrives at Lloyd Park by tram arrives switched on. The ride, the platform and the crowd at a town centre interchange all land before the camera does, so the first part of a Croydon pet session is not photography at all. It is a loop of the park at the dog's own speed until the ears stop tracking every noise. Frames taken before that point show an animal looking past the lens at something more interesting, and no quantity of treats will fix it. Traffic decides where we go. A major town centre is the wrong ground for a lead-off animal, so the park does the work, and streets are used only for dogs whose owners want the everyday version and can hold them safely. Where a lead has to stay clipped on, a long training line is fine. It is straightforward to lift out of a finished picture as long as it crosses plain mown grass rather than vanishing into planting, which is worth knowing when the spot gets chosen. Coat colour changes the plan more than breed does. A very dark coat under flat cloud renders as a shape rather than an animal, and the fix is low raking light near the beginning or the close of the day, or a background pale enough to draw an outline round it. Older and anxious animals are better served near home, on streets and grass they already recognise, in Addiscombe, Waddon or Selhurst as readily as in the park itself.
