A dog that arrives at Lloyd Park by tram arrives switched on. The ride, the platform and the crowd at a town centre interchange all land before the camera does, so the first part of a Croydon pet session is not photography at all. It is a loop of the park at the dog's own speed until the ears stop tracking every noise. Frames taken before that point show an animal looking past the lens at something more interesting, and no quantity of treats will fix it. Traffic decides where we go. A major town centre is the wrong ground for a lead-off animal, so the park does the work, and streets are used only for dogs whose owners want the everyday version and can hold them safely. Where a lead has to stay clipped on, a long training line is fine. It is straightforward to lift out of a finished picture as long as it crosses plain mown grass rather than vanishing into planting, which is worth knowing when the spot gets chosen. Coat colour changes the plan more than breed does. A very dark coat under flat cloud renders as a shape rather than an animal, and the fix is low raking light near the beginning or the close of the day, or a background pale enough to draw an outline round it. Older and anxious animals are better served near home, on streets and grass they already recognise, in Addiscombe, Waddon or Selhurst as readily as in the park itself.
